Ragusa

Ragusa is located in the south-east of Sicily. The province of Ragusa is famous for its baroque architecture, golden beaches, long olive groves and cultural traditions of Italian South. The capital is the city of Ragusa on a high hill, which is devided into two parts: the old (lower) Ragusa, also referred to as Ibla, and New (Upper) Ragusa. The upper town is famous for its lively lifestyle and modern buildings meanwhile architectural splendor forms are concentrated in Ragusa Ibla – the historical part of the city. Gardens Iblei, Basilica of San Giorgio, the church of Santa Maria della Scala – you can feel the Sicilian exotic sounds in each syllable of these names.
Travelling along the coast, you can meet other interesting cities in the province, such as Comiso with its castle from the 14th century, Vittoria and her Scoglitti beach and the town of Modica, included in the UNESCO as part of the unique « Baroque of the Val di Noto. » This region includes the town of Ragusa and Scicli. Modica is also known for its delicious cheese caciocavallo and chocolate  which is prepared by a unique ancient technology taken from the Aztecs.
A special pride of the province is Ispica. Here, the medieval architecture is of secondary importance to the natural beauty. At 15 km from the town is perhaps the most impressive place in all Ragusa – Canyon Cava d’Ispica  with an exceptional landscape, known as one of the first human habitats.
Also Pozzallo is worth visiting, located in a picturesque bay near the resort area of the Capo Passero at the most southern tip of Sicily. This is a typical seaside town with fish trattorias, narrow streets and an extended beach Pietro Nera. Pozzallo is a great place for holidays all year round thanks to the sunny weather and warm sea. From the port Pozzallo you can reach Malta by catamaran.
Marina di Ragusa is the most tourist place in the region of Ragusa with a wonderfull beaches and the touristic port. Other interesting places are Donnalucata, Punta Secca where was filmed the famous detective TV series Montalbano, translated into many languages.
A typical vacation for Ragusa is not so much in hotels as villas which are rentedby noisy companies or wealthy people. For amateurs of quiet rest there are more suitable small fishing villages scattered along the coast.
